Local Advocate Receives
Scouting’s Highest Honor for Service
John
Jadel to be honored for more than 50 years of service to Scouting
San Diego, CA – May 23, 2008 — Retired Akzo America President John
Jadel of Wilmette, Ill., has
significantly impacted thousands of youth through his volunteer leadership in
the Boy Scouts of America. For his 56 years of service to youth, the BSA National
Council will honor Jadel with the Silver Buffalo Award at its Annual Meeting in
San Diego on May 23.
The
Silver Buffalo Award, Scouting’s highest commendation for service to youth, has
been awarded annually since 1925 to civic-minded men and women who stand out
for their invaluable contributions and service to the youth of America.
In 56 years as a
Scouting volunteer, Jadel has continually helped the Boy Scouts of America move
forward and remain relevant to today’s youth. Additionally, he actively
promotes education among young people. Jadel funds scholarships at Michigan State, Bowling Green State, and Indiana universities. He
also has endowed Alpha Phi Omega’s Youth Program Grants initiative and the
Schoolyard Habitat Action Grants program of the Illinois Conservation
Foundation.
A recipient of the
Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, Jadel has worked successfully at every level of
Scouting. Among his many roles, he has served as a unit committee chairman,
district chairman, council president, area president, National Advisory Council
member, and president of the National Eagle Scout Association.
“Not only is John a
distinguished Scout himself, but he also has dedicated his life to serving our
youth,” said Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive. “The Boy Scouts of America is
proud to recognize his efforts to promote education among young people for more
than half a century.”
Jadel is a member
of the 1910 Society and holds the Silver Beaver Award (as did his father) and
the Silver Antelope Award. Among his other honors and awards are the
Distinguished Service Award from Alpha Phi Omega, the Chairman’s Award from the
Executive Service Corps of Chicago, and the Helms Award from Winnetka
Congregational Church, where he is an active member. Jadel and his wife,
Louise, have five children and five grandchildren.
