Mountain Treks
For family members of PTC participants
The Mountain Trek program is designed specifically for the sons and daughters
of Training Center conference participants. These treks coincide with the conference
center schedules, departing on Sunday afternoon and returning Saturday morning. A
conference participant may bring one additional Scout or Venturer for each family
member on a trek.
Mountain Trek crews hike 20 to 30 miles into the backcountry, where participants
stay at several camps that offer a variety of exciting programs along with time to
relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Philmont. Participants are organized into male
or female crews, and are supervised by experienced Mountain Trek rangers.
Who May Participate?
The Mountain Trek program is available to registered Scouts or Venturers who
are 14 years old as of January 1, but not yet 21. Participants are organized into
male or female crews and placed under the supervision of two of Philmont's highly
qualified rangers. Groups with fewer than 10 participants will be combined to
form a coed crew.
Please note: Week One of summer conferences and fall conference will not offer
a Mountain Trek program.
Routes for Mountain Treks are planned to meet the abilities and experience of
the crew. All participants must meet the minimum age and health requirements and
are under the responsibility of the conference participants.
What Equipment Will I Need?
Philmont will provide all crew equipment (including tents, cooking gear, and food).
Participants should bring only the equipment on the personal equipment list. Refer to the "Tips for more detailed descriptions of key items.
A Philmont Health and Medical Record (signed by a physician within the previous
12 months and a parent or guardian) is required. Philmont provides crew gear, but
participants will need the personal gear listed in the Mountain Trek equipment
list.
How Do I Apply?
Each Mountain Trek participant must complete and mail a Mountain Trek application
to Philmont prior to arrival. This form includes additional information that is needed
by the Mountain Trek rangers. The registration fee of $290 (2006 season) is due on or before May 1.
Please complete this form even if you have already been listed on the training center
participant's registration form.
