Tent Cities

Living in tents may be a new experience, but most people find the leisurely life of a tent dweller to be comfortable and enjoyable in Philmont's climate. Each tent city has showers and rest rooms, a playground, tent city office and shelter. Your tent city staff is on hand to help you in any way possible.

Your 10-by-12-foot canvas wall tent is on a wood or concrete platform and contains two twin metal-spring beds with mattresses, chairs, a place to hang your clothes, an electric outlet, and light. Irons, ironing boards, and other services are available for your use at no charge in your tent city office. Games, evening activities, cracker barrels, sing-alongs, patch-trading sessions, and other activities may be organized by your tent city staff or your fellow tent city residents.

Depending on the attendance and the ages and size of your family, tent assignments vary between several tents and cots or cribs for your children.

Meals

There is no additional cost for meals at Philmont; the attendance fee covers all meals.

All meals are served in the two Training Center dining halls in two shifts. You are assigned your dining hall and shift prior to arrival. At mealtime, the early arrivers in that shift line up. Your cooperation in observing these assignments is appreciated to avoid long lines and to ensure table space for all of our guests.

At mealtime, the early arrivers in that seating line up outside the dining hall, are led in the Philmont Grace by the staff, and head in to eat. The meals are varied and there is always a salad or fruit bar and peanut butter and jelly for your picky eaters. A selection of baby food is available on request at the dining hall. Refrigeration is available in the tent city offices for infant formula or medications.

If you or a member of your family has special diet requirements, please alert Philmont in advance by returning the Special Request Form. Philmont's isolated location limits the availability of many specialized or kosher food items. You need to bring special or kosher food items from home. Philmont's food service staff makes every effort to meet your needs but may not be able to accommodate persons following strict diets for religious or medical reasons.

Handicapped Facilities

The Training Center dining halls and some classrooms are wheelchair accessible, as are several tent platforms. Please notify the Philmont Training Center in advance, using the Special Request Form, if you require a wheelchair-accessible tent platform. Unfortunately, wheelchair transportation is not available.
