John Washburn, the Southern Region Venturing President, is a passionate outdoorsman, sailor and environmentalist. His fondest Venturing memories include racing to Bermuda through the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto, cookouts and rock climbing with his Shipmates in Georgia, and the friendships made while planting habitats, building boardwalks and counting insect larvae in the Chattahoochee.

John is an Eagle Scout, OA member and an Able Sea Scout, and has earned the Denali, the Venturing Silver, the God and Life, the TRUST, the Hornaday Badge and the Arts and Hobbies, Religious Life and Outdoor Bronze Awards. He has been named the 2008 VFW GA Scout of the Year. John has served as the Boatswain of Ship 22, Sargasso of Tucker, GA; Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 18 of Atlanta; VP for Program and Co-President of the Venturing Executive Cabinet of the Atlanta Area Council (AAC); Youth Representative to the Executive Board of the AAC; Crew Chief of the Southern Region Venturing Crew at the 2007 World Jamboree; and the Southern Region Boatswain.

In those roles, he has organized Council wide Venturing events, staffed Leukemia Cup Regattas, established a new Ship in urban Atlanta, helped organize VOAs, and created a newsletter and Facebook group to improve communications among SR Sea Scouts and other Venturers.
