Language of Scouting
The Language of Scouting provides information about the terms and style
associated specifically with Scouting (the "language of Scouting") and
grammar, spelling, and style norms used by the Custom Communication Division
at the national office of the Boy Scouts of America.
Scouting terms are based in part on the Charter and Bylaws and Rules and
Regulations of the Boy Scouts of America. Grammar, spelling, and style
decisions are based on the latest editions of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate
Dictionary and The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media
Law. Readers are encouraged to turn to these references (in the given
order) for further guidance. Note that if an entry is capitalized, it should
be capitalized whenever it is used.
In addition the terms and style associated with Scouting, three additional
features are provided: a list of National Council and local council professional
(and some paraprofessional) positions (provided by the Human Resources Group at
the national office), a list of abbreviations and acronyms commonly used in
Scouting, and abbreviations (both standard and postal) for states in the United
States. Each of these items may be viewed as a single Web page, or they may
be searched.
