Web site updates - 2005

Details on significant additions/changes to the Web sites in 2005.

December 2005

BSA Jamboree Website - Closed
http://www.bsajamboree.org/
The National Scout Jamboree 2005 Web site that provided live coverage of the event has been shut down. The site has been archived to http://old.scouting.org/jamboree/2005
NESA Web Site
http://old.scouting.org/nesa
http://www.nesa.org
Launched a new Web site for NESA members at www.nesa.org all content was removed from NESA's former location (old.scouting.org/nesa). A forwarding page will redirect users to the new site - however, any links from your council site to NESA or its resources will need to be updated to reflect the new location.
Cub Scout Support
http://old.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?sa=cy
http://old.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?sa=cp
http://old.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?sa=ca
Beefed up the sections of the scouting.org site for Cub Scouts and their leaders and added a new site for parents. The previous content is still there (none of the content files were moved), and a lot of new content has been added.

October 2005

Philmont Visitors
http://old.scouting.org/philmont/visitors
The "visitors center" section of the Philmont site has been completed and posted.
Join Cub Scouting - Now in Spanish
http://www.joincubscouting.org/index.s.html
We have translated the "Join Cub Scouting" site into Spanish. (The English version remains online as well).

September 2005

Disaster Recovery
http://www.goodturnforamerica.org/disasterrecovery
The recently-created "Hurricane Katrina Recovery" site has been changed to a more generic "Disaster Recovery" site.
The Merits of Marketing
http://marketing.scouting.org/
This new site has been launched to support marketing efforts on the council level. Some of the resources and information may also be of use to units, though they are not the primary audience.
Some of the items on this new site (fact sheets, PSAs, etc.) are identical to those on the scouting.org site. While there are no immediate plans to remove them from the main site, it's probably inevitable that this will become the new "home" for these items and the redundant copies will be removed.
If/when that occurs, it will be announced here and a forwarding page provided for a few months after removing any given item. If your site is undergoing a redesign or maintenance, it may be beneficial to change your links in advance.
Hurricane Katrina Recovery
http://www.goodturnforamerica.org/katrina
To support efforts at the council and unit level, the National Council has established a site that provides information about these initiatives.
Home Page Tweak
http://old.scouting.org/
The main site's home page has been modified slightly: some of the links have been moved about, program logos added, and the photo has been enlarged. It's purely cosmetic - no content has been altered in any significant way.
Boys' Life Web Site Redesign
http://www.boyslife.org
The Boys' Life Web Site has been redesigned to make the site more appealing to Cub-Scout- and Boy-Scout-aged youth. Much of the content from the old site remains available, and at the same locations, so it is not expected that this redesign will have caused any of your existing links to break.
Quality Unit Forms
http://old.scouting.org/forms
The 2006 versions of the quality pack, troop, team, and ship form have been added to the site. Because two years' worth of these forms are kept online, the files are not replaced - instead, the new (2006) versions have "06" in the file name, the old (2005) versions have "05" in the filename. You will need to update your links to offer the lastest forms.
Price of Freedom Conference
http://old.scouting.org/relationships/04-601
This is a promotion for a conference that will take place in February, 2006.
Youth Protection Training
The person to whom councils should send their letter and reporting requirements has changed - Marilyn Herrington (maherrin@netbsa.org) will be handling that task going forward. If you are already serving YPT, you do not need to resend your documents to Marilyn ... only if you need to be added or have your council documents updated in the future.

August 2005

Soccer and Scouting - Now in Spanish
http://www.soccerandscouting.org/index.s.html
We have translated the Soccer and Scouting site into Spanish. (The English version remains online as well).
Good Turn for America - Now in Spanish
http://www.goodturnforamerica.org/index.s.html
We have translated the Good Turn for America site into Spanish. (The English version remains online as well).

July 2005

Youth Protection Training (Boy/Cub Scout English) Upgraded
http://www.scoutstuff.org/pubs/ypt
Youth Protection Training on the BSA Web site has been upgraded. While the training remains the same insofar as content is concerned, the performance should be much improved. The most noticeable differences are that this new version will not throw "Type 3" errors (we were getting a lot of those) and provides users a certificate that they can print when they complete the training (note that this certificate has nothing to do with whether the user matched their record in PAS).
BSA Jamboree Website
http://www.bsajamboree.org/
The National Scout Jamboree 2005 Web site opened to provide live coverage of the event. After the jamboree is over, the site will remain online for a few months before being archived. Currently, the plan is to keep it online at that address until the end of the year.

June 2005

scoutstuff.org
http://www.scoutstuff.org/
The new (commerce-enabled) version of scoutstuff.org has gone live. You'll notice that there's a forwarding page to a different address, but that is a temporary measure - do not create a link to the address at scoutnet.scouting.org, as our IS department will eventually work things out so that the regular address (www.scoutstuff.org) goes directly to their box.
Awards (various)
Information has been added (or updated) on a handful of awards ...
old.scouting.org/awards/10-278/index.html - Ready & Prepared award
old.scouting.org/venturing/awards/quest.html - Venturing Quest award
old.scouting.org/venturing/awards/trust.html - Venturing TRUST award
old.scouting.org/venturing/awards/shooting.html - Venturing Shooting Sports Outstanding Achievement Award
Jamboree Training
http://old.scouting.org/jamboree/staff.html
Two training modules - youth protection training and drivers' license orientation - have been added to the Jamboree Staff page. DO NOT create links to these training modules from you council site, as they are for Jamboree participants only. The main concern is that users may mistake this training (especially Youth protection) for the "regular" versions, and they will not be properly credited if they take the Jamboree version. Also, these will probably be taken offline after the Jamboree, so they will be short-lived.
2007 World Scout Jamboree
http://old.scouting.org/jamboree/world/index.html
Information and youth/adult applications for the 2007 World Scout Jamboree have been added to the site.

May 2005

Youth Protection Training - Venturing Version
A new version of Youth Protection Training has been released. This alternative version is designed especially to address the unique aspects of the Venturing program. See the "training" page at old.scouting.org/webmasters/training for more information.
Site Map Redone
old.scouting.org/sitemap.html
The site map for the BSA Web site has been redone. This new format provides more links directly to specific content on the site.

April 2005

Camp Health Officer Training
old.scouting.org/pubs/19-141.ppt
A powerpoint presentation has been added to the site to provide training/orientation for Camp Health Officers. If you link directly to the PowerPoint file, please forewarn users about the download time.
Give "2" BSA Discontinued
www.give2.org
Finance support division has discontinued the use of this Web site. Users will be redirected to their site at www.scoutingfriends.org
Mailing List Upgrade
old.scouting.org/webmasters/newsletter
The mailing list script has been upgraded so that we can now send subscribers monthly newsletters in addition to "emergency" type notices.
The Language of Scouting
old.scouting.org/identity/los
The Language of Scouting provides information about the terms and style associated specifically with Scouting. Councils should refer to this guide when developing material for their Web sites (and other publications) to ensure consistent and correct use of terms.

March 2005

2004 Report to the Nation
old.scouting.org/media/report/2004/index.html
The 2004 Report to the Nation was delivered to the President and Congress. Next-day coverage was provided on the site, and will remain in an archive indefinitely.
Conducting a Webelos-ree
old.scouting.org/cubscouts/resources/13-238
Cub Scouting announces a new event designed to enhance the outdoor program of Webelos dens.
Emergency Site Moves
www.goodturnforamerica.org
www.soccerandscouting.org
www.scoutingmagazine.org
Due to a technical problem with our main Web server, we had to move these three sites off to another server in short order. Because this was a crisis situation, there was not time to provide adequate overlap between old and new locations, which may have caused some temporary outages. Sorry 'bout that ... couldn't be helped.

February 2005

Scouting's 95th Anniversary
old.scouting.org/media/anniversary
Marketing Communications is providing information about the history of Scouting. (Note: this may be a temporary site, taken down at the end of the year.)
Soccer and Scouting
www.soccerandscouting.org
This site was brought in-house, cleaned up, and re-posted. It should be OK to create "deep" links to its content now, as there are no plans to make any major changes in the near future.

January 2005

Venturing Division
old.scouting.org/venturing
Venturing Division has redesigned its section of the scouting.org site, adding quite a bit of new material. Some pre-existing links should not have been broken, others will need to be updated.
American Indian Scouting Association
aisa.scoutreachbsa.org
The Web site for the American Indian Scouting Association has been brought in-house.
Scoutreach Division
www.scoutreachbsa.org
Scoutreach Division has significantly expanded their Web presence, and has moved to a new address (their materials were formerly located at old.scouting.org/scoutreach
A forwarding page has been left at their former location to direct users to the new site until third-party links can be updated. I expect that the forwarding page will remain online for at least three months.
Safe Swim Defense/Safety Afloat
old.scouting.org/pubs/aquatics
Developed an online training module that teaches the concepts of Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat
NOTE: This module does not include reporting to the local council.
Scoutstuff.org Update
www.scoutstuff.org
The online catalog was updated with products and pricing for 2005.
